Print-on-demand

The best AI design tools for print on demand.

For POD, the question isn't only which AI makes the nicest image. It's whether you're allowed to sell it, whether it'll print sharply, and what Etsy makes you disclose. Here's how the popular tools compare on all three.

Three things that matter more for POD than image quality

  1. Commercial rights. Some free plans don't allow selling (Kittl Free is personal use only). Others let you sell but keep rights themselves (Leonardo's FAQ says it holds rights to free-tier creations while granting you a non-exclusive commercial licence). Read the plan, not just the homepage.
  2. Print resolution. AI images are often smaller than a print needs. Printify's generator makes 1024 × 1024 px images and upscales them automatically when an order goes to production; Printful's Design Maker shows a print-quality warning if your file's resolution is too low. Check before you publish.
  3. You may not be able to stop copycats. The U.S. Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that prompts alone don't give enough control to make you the author of an AI output. Human-made parts, edits and arrangement can still be protected (Copyright Office report). Adding your own lettering, layout and edits helps. This is general information, not legal advice.

Selling AI designs on Etsy: the rules

  • Disclose AI in the listing description of every AI-made item (Etsy).
  • Sell the finished design, not the prompts. Etsy doesn't allow AI prompt bundles sold on their own.
  • Add your POD company as a production partner (Etsy Help).
  • Watch out for other people's IP. AI tools can produce things that look like existing characters, logos or artists' styles. Etsy's rules and the tools' own terms put that responsibility on you.

All of this fits on two pages in our free Etsy AI Disclosure Checklist. Next step: make mockups and read Etsy's rules on AI product photos.
