Etsy SEO
How to use ChatGPT for Etsy titles and tags.
ChatGPT is fast at drafting titles and tags, but it doesn't know what Etsy shoppers search for and it miscounts characters. This workflow gives it the right facts, keeps it inside Etsy's limits, and checks the result with real keyword data.
Prompts below are our own templates. Etsy rules and limits are quoted from Etsy's Seller Handbook and Help Center, linked in each section.
What Etsy says about titles and tags
Feed these to ChatGPT so it writes for Etsy, not for Google:
- Search reads more than the title. Etsy says its search "takes a holistic view of your listing—including title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, reviews, and more" (How Etsy Search Works). So your title doesn't need to hold every keyword.
- Title guidance (Etsy, 2025): clearly state the item, like "mug" or "dress"; put the most important traits up front, like color, material and size; consider using fewer than 15 words; only include holidays, occasions or recipients if they're essential to the item; move subjective words like "perfect" or "beautiful" to the description; try not to repeat words; and don't add price, shipping or sale info (Etsy Seller Handbook).
- Limits: titles can be up to 140 characters (Etsy Help). You can use up to 13 tags per listing, each up to 20 characters. Tags can only include letters, numbers and spaces; you can use ' and - inside a tag but not at the start (Etsy Help: tags).
- Tags: Etsy recommends using all 13, as multi-word phrases in natural language, describing what the item is, how it's made and who it's for. Its rule of thumb: "If you can't imagine someone typing a phrase into Google, it shouldn't be in your tags." Attributes also act like tags, and "If a phrase appears in your attributes, you don't need to add it as a separate tag" (Anatomy of a Well-Crafted Etsy Listing).
The workflow, step by step
- Write down the facts. What it is, material, size, colors, style, who it's for, how it's made (including whether AI was used for the design), and which attributes you've already set in the listing form.
- Collect 10–20 candidate keywords from a keyword tool. ChatGPT can't tell you what shoppers type on Etsy. eRank's free plan gives you 5 keyword lookups a day, and EverBee's free Hobby plan includes 10 keywords. See the best Etsy SEO tools.
- Run the title prompt (below). Ask for 5 options so you can pick.
- Run the tags prompt. Ask it to skip phrases already covered by your attributes.
- Check lengths yourself. Paste the tags into a spreadsheet and use
=LEN(A1). Anything over 20 characters won't fit, and AI tools often miscount. - Check the keywords again in your keyword tool, then publish.
- Review in a few weeks. Etsy notes changes can take a while to have an effect. Check which search terms brought visits in your shop stats.

You are helping me write an Etsy listing title.
Etsy's guidance: clearly state the item first, put the most important traits
(color, material, size) up front, use fewer than 15 words, no subjective words

and only include holidays or recipients if essential to the item.

Description prompt
Draft an Etsy description from my facts only. Start with 1-2 sentences
saying what the item is and why someone would buy it, then bullet points
for size, materials, care and shipping notes. Plain, friendly tone.
[If the design was made with AI, add:] Include this disclosure line
near the top, word for word: "[your disclosure sentence]".
Facts: [paste]

Mistakes to avoid
- Letting it invent keywords. It will produce plausible phrases nobody searches for.
- Keyword-stuffed titles. Etsy's current guidance favors short, scannable titles.
- Trusting its character counts. Check them.
- Made-up details. AI drafts often add materials or features your item doesn't have. Etsy's Seller Policy asks you to represent items accurately.
- Forgetting the AI disclosure when the item itself was made with AI. Etsy requires it in the description. Our free Etsy AI Disclosure Checklist covers the rest.
